American soccer's European generation keeps raising the bar.
A decade ago, Americans playing consistently in Europe's top leagues were the exception. Today they are spread across the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, and the Premier League, and with the 2026 World Cup taking place on home soil, the stakes have never been higher. Here are five young US talents abroad who are worth following closely right now.
Noahkai Banks, Augsburg, Bundesliga, Age 19
Banks is, right now, the standout young American in a Big Five European league and it is not particularly close. The 19-year-old center back has already logged 1,257 Bundesliga minutes, while no other U21 American has featured in even 300 minutes across Europe's top five leagues. Born in Honolulu to an American father and German mother, Banks joined Augsburg's youth system back in 2015 and has since developed into a trusted starter, making 21 starts in 22 appearances this season. He is the clearest proof yet that American defenders can hold their own at the highest level in Europe.
Alex Freeman, Villarreal, La Liga, Age 21
Freeman's rise is one of the great recent stories in American soccer. He just had the best season for a fullback in MLS since 2012, before earning a move to Villarreal from Orlando City in January 2026. Minutes in Spain have been harder to come by since the move, putting what looked like a certain World Cup starting role in question. He is 21 years old with the tools to figure it out. The talent is not in doubt.
Johnny Cardoso, Atletico Madrid, La Liga, Age 22
For the first time in history, Atletico Madrid entered the Champions League with an American in their squad. Cardoso joined from Real Betis in the summer, bringing with him a reputation for composure and defensive intelligence that has impressed coaches and scouts throughout LaLiga. Playing Champions League soccer for one of the most demanding clubs in the world at 22 is a statement very few American players have ever been in a position to make.
Damion Downs, Hamburger SV, 2. Bundesliga, Age 22
Downs returned to Germany in January 2026 on loan from Southampton, having previously broken through at Cologne where he scored ten goals in 29 appearances to help win promotion to the Bundesliga. At 6'4" he is a physically imposing striker with a genuine goal threat, and after scoring the winning penalty against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup quarterfinal, a World Cup roster spot is firmly in the conversation.
Caleb Wiley, Chelsea, Age 20
Wiley's path has been bumpier than many expected. Chelsea sent him on loan to Watford rather than their preferred development setup, and then cut that loan short and brought him back to Stamford Bridge. The 20-year-old left back still has the raw ability that made him one of the most hyped young Americans in recent memory, and the situation at Chelsea is one worth watching closely as the World Cup summer approaches.
